Rapid & Paper Prototyping

Gamify the news with IMBY

Objective

Create a lo-fidelity prototype

Project Length

2 Weeks

Role

UX Designer

Tools used

Balsamiq, Sketch, Paper Prototyping, User Interviews, Competitive Analysis

Problem

Users don’t have a reliable source of local news and community developments. Users discover developments through observation first.

Solution

An app which will act as a local news aggregate and community development project compiler which will encourage users to be informed, active, and engaged community members.

Paper Prototyping

1st Iteration

Sketch Mockup

The first iteration suited business needs by being consistent with their brand and font, but there wasn’t much to keep user retention.

2nd Iteration

Balsamiq Prototype

A / B Testing

Through A/B Testing I learned that the first layout (Left) was too dense and needed more whitespace to be more readable. I decided on the second layout (Right) for the final prototype.

Gamification

By tapping on the buttons below news articles and events, you will earn points and achievements. This will encourage users to continue returning to the app and allow them to interact with their community.

Logo Design

Through feedback I decided to use a solid green background and an askew logo.

Conclusion

For future projects, I will definitely invest more into the research before and during the design process, as feedback from my peers and quotes from user interviews are imperative to the process, and being able to speak on those quotes and the feedback a received would increase my designs credibility immensely. There are also many features I would have liked to add to the final design, such as a poll for users to take daily which would display within the news section, so users could have restaurant and business recommendations based on the answers from people within their own communities.
